I took a kinda of an "extreme" measure a few hours ago and finally decided not only to close my facebook account (since you can always enter back like nothing really happened) but completely obliterated the possibility for me to get inside that pit hole again... ever. I deleted all of my pics (some of them were left out because they were non consequential), I abandoned all of the groups I was in and I (the most importantly) changed my password to something I really don't remember what it was and I'll never see back again. Even if there's still a chance to get back to facebook... everything would be absolutely in chaos and mayhem and will be a pain in the ass to get back to normality. And since I'm a lazy ass motherf*cker... I won't even try.
Why did I do such a blasphemous thing?
I finally got (late but i got it) to the conclusion that facebook is
the worst thing for an artist to have. Personally I don't know what
other artists feel about this, but from my point of view facebook is an illusion.
I mean... it exists alright. But as everything it represents or saids
to be (a way to contact people, a diffusion and publicity medium, an
image platform, etc) it's a lie. It's an illusion.
I mean for
starters it's an awful artistic platform. If you think you can get
clients through that medium? Dude... you're completely wrong. People
That like your stuff are other artists or people who like to like stuff
just because (no offense to those people, they can do whatever they want
on their free time), but if you think you are gonna get a job through
that? Messed up. And if you do I can bet is an awful gig. Besides the
image quality is disgusting.
Second. Facebook is an
incredible time consuming machine. We all procrastinate and web surf and
all that shit. But during the day I have such time for that kind of
thing and facebook amazingly takes it all. Just... swallows you up.
Because every thing's there. DeviantArt, tumblr, cghub? your favorite
artists...whatever you need. And gets you out of getting into some other
real places like conceptart.org. muddycolors.blogspot.com,
drawcrowd.com... etc etc... It's like the substitute of what you should
really be consuming.
Third is the friend and contacts
thing. "Oh but your gonna lose touch with those you love, your friends,
family, etc"... 10 years ago people called each other! what the hell
man. I mean... is the same thing that happened to MSN... you had nothing
else to talk about when you really actually meet. It's not they don't
have it. I do. I go out and meet with people once in a while. But not
having a facebook account is not gonna make me away from those I love.
know you can have selfcontrol, that you need to be disciplined with
your time and be mature and blablabla. But this is personal. I'm a huge
procrastinator (as any other of my fellow artists) because I'm all the
time painting, drawing, working, etc. And facebook is a huge window out
to a world of nothing. It creates the illusion you are with people, that
you're socializing, that you're taking a brake... but the reality is
that you spent more than 10 hours a day... EVERYDAY... almost every
month of the year... looking through a small monitor. I'm very sorry.
But I'm just sick of it. If TV was bad... this is... f*cking wrong.
also not gonna make a call to everyone to get out of facebook. I took
my time to figure it out. Maybe you're not like me and you actually
"need" it or use it or whatever is the excuse you have, or do no to
procrastinate as much as I do, maybe you're a better person than me... I
don't know. But my conclusion is that if you're a learning artist and use facebook to get yourself "out there"... is no use. DeviantArt, Drawcrowd, Conceptart.org and more and more. Those are good. Those give you things back.
